Abstract
Luminescence has been observed (to the three lowest 5I levels) from 5G4, 5G5, 5F3 and 5F5, all situated only about 2000 cm-1 above the next-lower level, demonstrating (together with the 0.1 ms lifetime for green (5F4, 5S2) emission) an exceptional propensity for 4f10 holmium(III) to fluoresce in the fluoride glass. Branching ratios and peak cross sections are discussed.
