Abstract

Luminescence has been observed (to the three lowest ⁵I levels) from ⁵G₄, ⁵G₅, ⁵F₃ and ⁵F₅, all situated only about 2000 cm^-1 above the next-lower level, demonstrating (together with the 0.1 ms lifetime for green (⁵F₄, ⁵S₂) emission) an exceptional propensity for 4f¹⁰ holmium(III) to fluoresce in the fluoride glass. Branching ratios and peak cross sections are discussed.
