Abstract

This paper presents a study of the magnetic properties of a series of amorphous Gd-Co films, comparing them with the known ordered compounds. The properties of the films - T//C, magnetization, compensation temperature and anisotropy - are all found to be smoothly-varying functions of film composition. By contrast, the properties of the ordered compounds vary in a less systematic way. The results suggest that the unusual differences between the properties of crystals and amorphous films arise from special features of the crystalline, not the amorphous, state.
