Abstract

We present magnetization and Mössbauer effect studies of the body centered tetragonal (I4/mmm) systems RM2Si2-xGex and RM4+xAl8-x (R = 4f, M = nd element). The results reveal spin structures, properties of the R ions and the peculiar nature of the magnetic moment at the M site. It is generally nonmagnetic in RM2Si2-xGex, induced for Cr in RCr4Al8, paramagnetic for Mn in RMn4Al8 and strongly coupled ferrimagnetically (Tc ≈ 330 K) in RFe6Al6.
