N2 - Mango breeding in Israel is aimed at both cultivars and rootstocks breeding. As a result. fifteen interesting seedlings characterized in high fruit quality, very appealing appearance, and covering the mango season in Israel from July to December, have been selected. The selections 'Tango' and 'Shelly' are being tested on semi-commercial plots. Mono-embryonic rootstocks tolerant to calcareous soils and saline water were selected. They are vegetatively propagated by rooting of cuttings and grafted with commercial cultivars in order to evaluate their performance as rootstocks. Estimates for the genetic variance components were obtained through linear models and regression analysis between parents and progeny performance. The model was best fit when the selfing level was estimated at 50%. In this analysis, while the additive genetic variance was small and non-significant, the non-additive component was found to be large and significant in most traits. Estimates for genetic correlations between several traits were based on the performance of the parents and their progeny Two kinds of DNA markers were used. DNA Fingerprints (DFP), were applied for identification purposes, study of genetic relationship and genetic analysis. AFLP applied to several mango cultivars revealed informative band patterns with a reasonable level of polymorphism. These results point towards the potential of DNA markers and especially the AFLP as a tool for identification of cultivars and improvement of mango breeding projects.
