Abstract

A biography of Victorian Jewish scholar Marcus Kalisch is presented. Topics discussed include his family and educational backgrounds, his troubles in securing a teaching position at a Gymnasium, the relationship developed between Kalisch and Lionel de Rothschild family, his reputation as a scholar, the release of his book "A Historical and Critical Commentary on the Old Testament," and criticisms of Kalisch's literary works on Christianity.
