Abstract
The precipitate obtained upon irradiating Ar-saturated Cd2+ aqueous solutions containing alcohols or formate is shown to consist of pure cadmium metal. The yield of Cd0 indicates that the principal reaction undergone by Cd+ ions is disproportionation to Cd0 and Cd2+. The chemical properties and optical spectrum of Cd0 in suspension were studied. The latter was found to consist of a large-grain dispersion by Cd0, with absorption peaks in the uv which are attributed to interaction between Cd0 and dissolved Cd2+. This system makes it possible to analyze the kinetic processes associated with the nucleation and growth of metallic precipitates through the use of pulse radiolytic techniques. The amount of precipitate obtained from various divalent ions is correlated with their effectiveness in reducing G(H2).
