Abstract
This review describes the application of various methods for the improvement of secondary metabolite (diosgenin) production by Dioscorea deltoidea plant cells in suspension cultures. Initially 1% diosgenin (of dry weight), corresponding to a concentration of 114 mg/liter was obtained after 28 days of incubation. Concentration and rate of diosgenin production were improved to 7.2% (of dry weight) and to a maximal concentration of 230 mg/liter in 12 days.
