Abstract

A conceptual model which refers to the seal layer in terms of basic soil physics concepts (soil water retention and hydraulic conductivity - water content relationship), is applied to investigate the dynamic changes of the soil hydraulic properties within the zone of the seal layer. The model was calibrated using results of infiltration tests carried out on two saturated soils: sandy loam and loam (loess). The runoff hydrographs calculated by the model are found to agree well with the observed data. Subsequently, the model was used to calculate the runoff-rainfall relationships for the two soils, and the effect of the surface sealing on the ponding time. The difference between the two soils is clearly reflected in the range of short ponding time corresponding to high rainfall intensities. -from Authors
