Abstract

Research in recent years has brought forth the notion that neural, endocrine, immunological, and inflammatory mechanisms are functionally integrated within a major regulatory axis controlling homeostasis and adaptation of the organism to its external and internal environment. The immune system and the neuroendocrine system affect each other via molecules and receptors shared by both systems. Potent effects of various neuropeptides on mast cells, lymphocytes, macrophages, and granulocytes have been documented, and this field of research is only in its beginning. To date, a wide variety of neurotransmitters have been shown to bind and affect the function of phagocytes and their precursors.
