Abstract

The refractive index and density of dilute solutions of tetra-n-alkylammonium bromides in water and in N,N-dlmethylformamlde (DMF) were measured at 298.15 K. The following values of the Infinite dilution molar refractivities (In cm3 mol-1) were found: NH4Br 15 ± 2, (CH3)4NBr 36 ± 2, (C2H5)4NBr 47 ± 1, (C2H5)4NI 61 ± 2, (C3H7)4NBr 73 ± 2 (In water) and 88 ± 2 (In DMF), (C4H9)4NBr 91 ± 2 (In both solvents), (C5H11)4NBr 108 ± 2 (In water) and 110 ± 2 (In DMF), (C6H13)4NBr 128 ± 3, and (C7H13)4NBr 150 ± 3. They yield a slope of 19.0 cm3mol-1per four methylene groups added in the alkyl chains, when plotted against the length of the latter. The calculated polarizabilities of the cations are proportional to their van der Waals volumes.
