Abstract
The history of Molière's troubles with the religious Establishment and the "parti dévot" is well known. Tartuffe's plot, though, makes things still worse. Written in 1664, the play was finally authorized in 1669: only after five years of a ruthless fight between the playwright and religious censorship. In fact Molière paid also for the misconduct of his royal protector, young Louis XIV. The proportions reached by the Tartuffe case are a clear evidence of the role played by the theatre, especially Molière's comedies, in his own time.
