Abstract
In the study of unidirectional Kevlar-fibre-reinforced composites, two principal modes of failure were detected: one by the formation of plait-like structures in the embedding medium between fibres; and another involving fibre fracture by splitting and longitudinal matrix and interfacial shear fracture. A theoretical interpretation of the fracture phenomena is proposed.
