Abstract

In three samples of palygorskite, Fe3+ was found from Mossbauer data to occupy edge sites with relatively regular 6-coordination, and M(1) or M(2) sites in the interior of the chains. Data obtained on heating are compatible with a model of palygorskite dehydroxylate previously proposed by Preisinger (1963, in Clays and Clay Minerals, Proc. 10th Nat. Conf., Austin, Texas, 1961, pp 365-371). -D.F.B.
