Abstract

Multifunctional diffractive optical elements have independent impulse responses for polarizations or for different wavelengths. Three approaches that either use birefringent material or artificial dielectrics are taken to construct such elements. Applications for packaging optical interconnects of optoelectronic VLSI and in realizing compact transparent optical interconnection networks using these multifunctional diffractive optical elements are also discussed.
