Abstract
The optimal HLB for multiple emulsions was investigated and found to be dependent on the concentrations of emulsifiers I and II. The shift of the optimal HLB at different emulsifier concentrations is proved to be a result of the free emulsifier I which exists in the oil phase of the primary emulsion. Linear correlation between the optimal HLB, the concentration of emulsifier II, and the reciprocal concentration of emulsifier I is observed. Yields of preparation of the multiple emulsions were determined by a chloride titration and conductivity measurement, without using a dialysis cell.
