Abstract

Statistical mechanical methods to calculate analytically the behavior of the mutual information (MI) as the system size N of the population grows are introduced. It is demonstrated that the exponential saturation rate is dominated by a contribution from the two stimulus values that induce the closest response probabilities in the population.
