Abstract
The rapid rate of physical development outside the old city walls was initiated by members of the Moslem, Jewish and Christian communities in response to poverty, overcrowding, epidemics and the deterioration of the infrastructure of the old city. The article reviews the significance and character of the planning approaches adopted.-J.Sheail English
