N2 - This article is the first part of a report on a study dealing with the compatibility of a chemical compound containing aminoquinaldinum diacetate (Salvizol) as a chemotherapeutic agent in endodontics. The second part, entitled The Calcium-Dissolving Properties of Salvizol from Root Canals and From Dentine Powder, and the third part, entitled Salvizol-A Chemotherapeutic and Bacteriocidal Agent in Endodontics: A Seven-Year Clinical Study, are in the process of preparation. The present study compares Salvizol to EDTA-C as a chemomechanical and irrigation solution. It seems that Salvizol possesses special properties which make it ideal as an irrigating and chemomechanical solution for endodontic treatment. These properties are: (1) it removes organic material from the dentine matrix; (2) it removes the gauged dentin; (3) it has excellent cleaning capacities; (4) the use of Salvizol in root canals exposes the dentinal tubules and the intertubular connections, leaving them patent; and (5) Salvizol is efficient in the apical third, where EDTA-C has failed to act. These qualities, together with others such as low toxicity and irritating properties and its wide spectrum of bacteriocidity and fungicidity, make Salvizol an ideal chemotherapeutic agent for use in endodontics.
