Abstract
Trajectories of geomagnetically trapped particles under the influence of a finite amplitude monochromatic Alfvén wave are determined. These trajectories are used to calculate and investigate the nonlinear damping rate of the wave by bounce-drift resonance. The steady-state wave amplitude, setting in as a result of saturation of the single-mode instability, is in agreement with the typical values observed.
