Abstract
The interaction of an approximately monochromatic ion-cyclotron wave with fast protons confined by a magnetic field is studied. The particle distribution in a wave of constant amplitude is found. The nonlinear wave damping rate is calculated. The level at which the cyclotron instability reaches saturation is estimated for the single-mode case. The results are used to interpret satellite observations of ion-cyclotron waves in the range Pc1--Pc2, excited by the cyclotron instability of fast protons of the ring current in the magnetosphere.
