Abstract

The nonlinear effects accompanying the growth of plasma wave satellites in a collisionless plasma are investigated. A plateau forms on the particle distribution function for the stochastic layer as a result of phase mixing in this layer. This plateau causes a substantial increase in the growth rate for the satellite instability. The nonlinear suppression of this instability associated with the perturbation of the particle trajectors by the satellite is studied for the single-mode case.
