Abstract

Discrete spatial solitons were studied in nonlinear waveguide arrays. The waveguide arrays were fabricated from an AlGaAs wafer using a combination of standard photolithography and reactive ion etching with SiCl4. The output mode profile of a waveguide array where there was a single input to the center waveguide is presented. Experiments performed with different lengths and coupling coefficients show evidence for self-localization of the optical field in a nonlinear waveguide array.
