Abstract

Clay material recovered during the 1980 cruise SO-14 RV of 'Sonne' in the SW Pacific basin from core KL9 at 4250 m depth on a small sediment contains some layers of nearly pure nontronite which have only trace levels of Al. The b-axis spacing is 9.09 A and the mineral consists of sheaves of fibres <50 A wide, with an unusually low dehydroxylation T of 454oC. Definitive dating of the mineral was not possible but it probably formed at least 12 m.y. ago. -D.F.B.
