Abstract
A study is made of the response of a model tropical cyclone to the change in surface roughness subject to constraint on the flows of water from the surface and without such constraints. It is shown that if the flows of water from the surface of the land do not exceed those from the ocean before the cyclone reaches the land, the cyclone becomes weaker on landfall. The decay is the more rapid the less the evaporation from the land.
