Abstract

We report an ESR study of Nd³⁺ in the cubic d band intermetallic compounds LuRh₂ and LuIr₂. The g value was found to be g = 2.62 +- 0.01 for both compounds which is close to that expected for a γ₆ ground state crystalline field splitting of the Nd 4f³ (J = 9/2) configuration. The hyperfine constants appropriate to ^{1 4 3}Nd and ^{1 4 5}Nd were found to be smaller than the free ionic values. This decrease is attributed to conduction electrons effects.
