Abstract
Two aspects of erythroid differentiation and maturation are referred to to illustrate the complexity and immense refinement of the events leading from the erythroid-committed stem cell to the mature erythrocyte: The evolution of a soluble cell component is indispensable for a non-hemoglobin producing erythroid progenitor cell to transform itself into one which elaborates hemoglobin in abundance. A casual relationship is strongly supported between the cellular hemoglobin concentration and the cessation of nucleic acid synthesis in the maturing erythroid cell.
