Abstract
The by now standard expression for the free energy of interaction of a pair of molecules in terms of molecular susceptibilities at imaginary frequencies follows from a straightforward perturbation expansion of the statistical operator exp(- βH) and from the possibility to express the terms in the expansion in terms of intramolecular charge density correlations at imaginary times.
