Abstract
A partial summation of the Born series for the transition operator, retaining only the contributions from intermediate states on the energy shell, is shown to yield a unitary S matrix and to be equivalent to the use of the first Born approximation for the reaction matrix. For the distorted-wave Born series the results provide an improved approximation for fast (i.e. sudden) molecular collisions.
