Abstract
The systematic variation of both exact and Hartree-Fock expectation values as asymptotically linear functions of the nuclear charge Z is derived, and the unusually high accuracy of certain Hartree-Fock values explained, by means of Z-dependent perturbation theory, the Hellmann-Feynman theorem and the virial theorem.
