Abstract

A one-dimensional model for aqueous solutions of inert gases is presented for which the partition function may be calculated exactly. The water is treated as a mixture of monomeric water molecules and various icelike aggregates. It is shown that clustering is promoted by an inert gas only if the inert-gas molecules can occupy interstitial sites in the clusters. Numerical illustrations are given of the effect of an inert gas upon the cluster equilibrium and of the dependence of the enthalpy and entropy of solution upon the numerical parameters of the theory.
