Abstract

The exponential Born approximation is used to compute S matrices and opacities for rotational transitions in a model system corresponding to a heavy atom-heavy diatomic collision. The results are in good agreement with the exact calculations in the limited coupling region. The use of the exponential Born approximation, together with a statistical approximation for regions of low angular momentum, make possible the practical computation of cross sections for inelastic rotational transitions.
