Abstract
The quantum mechanical "sudden" approximation, valid in the limit of small momentum transfer, is discussed and applied to the quenching of glory extrema in rotational excitation. Physically the approximation corresponds to the rotational degrees of freedom being "frozen" during the mutual (elastic) scattering.
