Abstract

The objective of this investigation was to obtain an understanding of the optical properties of the Sm**3** plus ion in phosphate and borate glasses and to interpret the influence of the glass matrix on these properties. Authors report the following experimental results: Oscillator strengths due to all the intraconfigurational f - f transitions. Concentration quenching of Sm**3** plus emission. Quantum efficiency of fluorescence from the **4G//5/////2 level determined experimentally by a) the comparative method and b) from radiative transition probabilities and measured decay times.
