Abstract
Optimisation of deep bed filters is commonly performed by conducting extensive pilot plant experiments. In this work a logical model is introduced for optimising deep bed filters and minimising experimentation. Various filtering materials are evaluated in single, dual, and mixed media configurations. It is concluded that the optimisation process should involve two successive stages; process optimisation and economic optimisation. Single media filters containing basalt or tuff are more economic than single, dual, and mixed media filters containing conventional filtering materials.
