Oxygen and tumor angiogenesis

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Cell survival depends on a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients carried by the blood. Therefore, every cell of the body must by sufficiently close to a blood capillary to allow for efficient nutrient diffusion. A tissue cannot grow beyond ~ 1 mm in diameter before requiting new blood vessels to invade and nourish it. Tumor cells are no exception to that rule, and a vast body of evidence indeed shows that continuous blood vessel formation is obigatory for tumor growth and metastasis
