Abstract

The rates of dark respiration of Glycine max leaves, pods, and seeds, are shown to be positively related to O2 concentration ([O2]) between 2 and 21 per cent. It is suggested that the reported depression of seed growth, due to subatmospheric concentrations of O2 is caused simply by depression of respiration and that it is not necessary to postulate a new control mechanism mediated by [O2].
