Abstract

The rates of dark respiration of Glycine max leaves, pods, and seeds, are shown to be positively related to O₂ concentration ([O₂]) between 2 and 21 per cent. It is suggested that the reported depression of seed growth, due to subatmospheric concentrations of O₂ is caused simply by depression of respiration and that it is not necessary to postulate a new control mechanism mediated by [O₂].
