Abstract

Mossbauer spectroscopy of 1% doped57 samples and magnetic-susceptibility measurements were used to study the magnetic order in the nonsuperconducting La8-xSrxCu8Oy (x=1.28, 2, and 6 and y=16-20) systems. These compounds crystallize in a tetragonal crystal structure, space group P4/mbm, where the Cu ions reside in three inequivalent crystallographic sites. The Mossbauer studies show that all the samples investigated are antiferromagnetically ordered and TN depends on x and very strongly on the oxygen content y. In La6Sr2Cu8O19+δ TN decreases from 235 K for the oxygen-deficient sample to 140 K for the oxygen-annealed sample. Most striking is the behavior of La2Sr6Cu8Oy where TN drops from 290 K for y=16 to 9 K for y=17.6. This oxygen dependence of TN is similar to that observed for the YBa2Cu3Oz system.
