Abstract
The ichthyocrinotoxic secretion of the Red Sea flatfish Pardachirus marmoratus and paradaxin, a polypeptide isolated from this secretion, were toxic when injected i.v. into rats. Pardaxin inhibits [Na+, K+] ATPase (Primor et al., 1980) but enhances esterase activity. Pardaxin caused hemolysis in dog red blood cells which lack [Na+, K+] ATPase. It is concluded that pardaxin induced hemolysis is not caused by [Na+, K+] ATPase inhibition.
