Abstract

The notions of exact, dynamical and partial syrnmetries are discussed in relation to nudear spectroscopy. Explicil forms of Hamiltonians with partial SU(3) symmetry are presenled in the framework of lhe interacting boson model of nuclei. An analysis of the resulting spectrum and electromagnetic transilions demonslrales lhe relevan ce of sueh parlial symmetry lo lhe speclroscopy ofaxially deformed nuclei.
