Abstract

Characterization of particles in wastewater effluents in relation to clogging and filtration problems is the purpose of this work. Activated sludge, trickling filter, aerated lagoons and seasonal wastewater reservoir effluents are sampled and the following related parameters determined: type of particle, general shape, particle size (PSD) and volume (PVD) distributions, electrostatic potential, surface elements and functional groups, and water turbidity, organic and mineral content. A special procedure was developed to enable the application of the HIAC to PSD measurements in effluents due to their complex nature.
