Abstract

Optical processes which provide information on the vibrational properties of solids are considered with emphasis on those processes that provide information on vibrational properties of Van Hove critical points in the Brillouin zone: second order Raman scattering, impurity induced first order Raman scattering, and phonon assisted fluorescence in rare earth ions.
