Abstract

Acrylic copolymers with mesogenic and spiropyran side chains yield a photochromic mesophase absorbing strongly in the visible region (λmax 570-590 nm) on irradiation with UV light. The color disappears on irradiation with visible light or thermally. Thermodynamic spectroscopic and kinetic properties of the photochromic polymers were investigated. The structure of the mesophase is discussed.
