Abstract
A level set approach to establish the importance of symmetry elements of the three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals to their band gap properties was described. The level-set approach allows easily mapping of photonic crystals with different connectivities. The structural study of photonic structure suggested that a basic connectivity determines the existence of a photonic gap. It is found that the basic band gap properties depend strongly on the basic connectivity of the structures.
