Abstract

Photosensitized reductive cleavage of acetylene to methane is accomplished in an aqueous solution that includes [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) as sensitizer, triethanolamine as electron donor, and an [RuL₅(H₂O)]²⁺ complex that acts as electron acceptor and catalyst in the process.
