Abstract

Poly (anhydrides) containing aliphatic and aromatic moieties, poly(ω-(p-carboxyphenoxy)alkanoic anhydride), of the structure -(COC6H40(CH2)„COO)n- (x = 1, 4, and 7) were synthesized by either melt or solution polymerization with molecular weights of up to 44600. These polymers displayed a zero-order hydrolytic degradation profile for 2–10 weeks. The longer the length of the alkanoic chain, the longer the degradation rate. Stability studies under anhydrous conditions showed that these polymers were stable in solid state for over 6 months at 25 °C but underwent reversible self-depolymerization in chloroform solution.
