Abstract

Coupling between copper dθ and dε states in cuprates leads to a pairing mechanism that has the same form, but opposite sign, to that of BCS theory. It is stable against lattice distortion even for strong coupling. The nature of the interaction (Jahn-Teller type or an excitonic process having similar symmetries) is considered.
