Abstract
Similarity between deep bed filtration and bed adsorption or ion exchange exists, emphasizing the key role of breakthrough curves in filter design. This similarity was used to develop a predictive solids accumulation-detachment model which incorporates filter capacity and hydraulic conductivity as major physical parameters. Prediction of concentration and heat loss profiles using this model and small test filter results makes possible improvement of filter productivity and application of optimization techniques to obtain better utilisation of filter capacity.
