Abstract

The Kirkwood-Buff integrals of aqueous mixtures of ethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, and the polyethyleneglycols PEG300 and PEG400 were calculated from thermodynamic data. Volume-corrected preferential solvation parameters for the first solvation shell were then calculated with correlation volumes pertaining to linear oligomeric molecules rather than spherical ones, provided the preferential solvation is small, as is the case for the glycols. The numbers of water molecules associated with each oxygen atom of the glycols in dilute solutions were obtained from these data.
