Abstract
Water of high salinity may have different clogging problems. This work deals with experimental evaluation of backwashing as a physical preventive routine treatment and with clinical-chemical means of preventive and post-clogging treatment. Pilot filters with different beds were used in order to determine proper combinations of air-water backwash. Mathematical models were examined to enable prediction of percent bed expansion for specific backwash rates. Massive filter clogging occurred when certain algae was blooming in the water. Scale precipitation was satisfactorily dealt with acid. Polymeric antiscalants showed promising results.
